Formed in Oporto in 1990,
Frei Fado d’el Rei built their project around a sound enriched
with elements from diverse origins. More than a mere premeditated
abridgement of styles, this evolution obeyed a natural process of
fusion. A balanced and harmonious fusion between the imaginary of
Fado, Popular music and Flamenco.
Bearing witness to a growing maturity, the inclusion of new instruments,
such as Cello Mandola and samplers, has come to reafirm the very individual
sound and personality of this band. With a show of classic contours
but a modern approach, unconventional location such as castles, old
theatres and monasteries become the stage of choice for the band´s
performances.
In 1994 Frei Fado d’el Rei participated in a tribute album to
Zeca Afonso “Filhos da Madrugada”.
At the end of 1995, after a long period of maturation, Sony Music
realeased Frei Fado d’el Rei’s first album, “Danças
no Tempo”. This work received very positive reviews from the
media and an enthusiastic welcome from the public.
Frei Fado d’el Rei´s second work “Encanto da Lua”
emerged naturally in 1998. It includes the participation of Vitorino
on the track “Ramo Verde” and the Galician singer Uxia
and Janita Salomé. This album was released in Japan, Greece,
Spain and Israel. The band also participated during this year in the
compilation album “Saudade, sons dos Oceanos”.
They have participated in various concerts in Brasil, The United States,
Spain, Holland and Belgium.
June 2003 saw the live recording at the monastery of Leça do
Balio of a memorable concert set into the 1000 year commemorations
of this national monument.
