Margarida Guerreiro was born in Alentejo,
in Montemor-o-Novo. Margarida´s first contact with fado arose
through listening to old fado records belonging to her parents. These
records, by great fado singers such as Amália Rodrigues, Manuel
de Almeida and Maria Teresa de Noronha, inspired Margarida´s
passion for this heartfelt way of singing and Margarida was deeply
marked by the performances. And so was born in Margarida Guerreiro
a love for that which is of the greatest symbol of Portuguese culture
- Fado.
Receiving a strong incentive from fellow countryman and the author
of most of the poems she sings, Manuel Justino Ferreira, Margarida
performed for the first time at Convento de São Domingos, in
Montemor-o-Novo. This event marked the beginning of a widely-recognised
musical career.
Of the many concerts in which she was participated in Portugal, Spain,
Venezuela, France, Switzerland, the United States and Canada, Margarida
Guerreiro records with particular emotion, an Amália Rodrigues
concert at which she was invited to perform.
In 2003, Margarida Guerreiro released her first album, “Sal
e Mel”, which received very good reviews.
Margarida became regular performer on television, radio, cultural
venues and has performed live throughout the country. In 2004, she
was called to be a part of the album, “Divas do Fado Novo”,
next to other fado singers such as Mísia, Cristina Branco,
Ana Moura, among others. The recording of her next album is currently
being done, to be published in 2004.
